So in case anyone has been wondering, "But Becca, like half the internet is firewalled in mainland China! How are you ever going to write a blog that's hosted by Google??"
(OK, so like two people have seen this so far. Probs safe to say nobody has wondered that.)
But IN CASE YOU HAVE, all two of you guys, I got this covered. It's true, Blogger is not available in China. But Gmail is, at least for now, and Blogger has a feature where you can email posts to a secret email address and have them posted automatically. So that's how this will work!
Here's a map of our route, zoomed out so you can see much of China & its neighbors.
We're starting at Beijing (the apex, if you can't read the text) and going counter-clockwise. The second bubble is Xi'an. The cruise runs between the third and fourth bubbles (lower left corner), with the exciting part, the Three Gorges, situated closer to the fourth bubble. The lower right corner is Shanghai (+ Hangzhou, Suzhou and Nanjing), and the holy mountain is the bubble halfway between Shanghai and Beijing.
Highlighting the limits of what any of us will see and do in our painfully short lifetimes, I will probably never go to Hong Kong & Canton province, Sichuan province, or Tibet, because we had to skip out basically the entire south & west of China (right... I'm 22, there's probably still time...) They're so far away from Beijing, it's really not doable in one trip. If only we could teleport there. (Ojalá!) But Hong Kong seems like it's sort of just a generic ubershiny international city compared with some of the northern cities, you know? Granted, it is incredibly shiny... And but so you have to join a tour group to get to Tibet. That's AFTER you take a 2-day train ride up the mountains.
